MOUNTAIN STATE BLUE CROSS BLUE SHIELD RECEIVES WOOD COUNTY OUTSTANDING BUSINESS PARTNER “GOLDEN APPLE AWARD”

(PARKERSBURG)— Mountain State Blue Cross Blue Shield received the Golden Apple Award for Outstanding Business Partner from the Wood County Council Parent Teacher Association (PTA). This award recognizes the Outstanding Business Partner in Wood County who has made a significant achievement to enhance the educational needs of the students.

Nominated by Franklin Elementary Center Principal Marjorie Hamric, Mountain State competed with 20 local Wood County businesses. Applications were judged by PTA officers and voted on exclusively based on the activities or programs either sponsored or supported by the business partner.

Mountain State employees supported the education of Franklin Elementary Center students by organizing and administering a fund raising event to upgrade the school’s computer lab. The effort raised over $4,000. Mountain State employees also volunteered by raising money and collecting items for needy families at Christmas, collecting labels, giving time to school and PTA events, providing guest speakers and participating in numerous school programs.

“Mountain State Blue Cross Blue Shield is honored to receive this award. We are committed to supporting the educational needs of area students who are the future of West Virginia, and our employees take the initiative to make sure the children have every opportunity to succeed,” said Gregory K. Smith, President and CEO.

Jean Wilson, Wood County Council PTA President, presented the Golden Apple Award for Outstanding Business Partner to Betty Swartz, Mountain State Blue Cross Blue Shield Business Partner representative, at a ceremony in Parkersburg last week.

Mountain State Blue Cross Blue Shield is an independent licensee of the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association. Mountain State provides or administers coverage to more than 250,000 individuals and has over 700 employees in Parkesburg, Charleston, Wheeling, Martinsburg and Weirton.
